🚦 Obey the Road Rules
🛑 No aero bars, ear buds or headphones.
- Hold a straight line and avoid sudden braking or swerving — there's usually someone right behind you.
- NEVER turn around. Your job is to watch the rider in front, not those behind.
- When the pace drops, try not to use the brakes. Instead, ease alongside the rider in front until you’ve slowed down and can safely slot back in.
- Sitting upright with hands on the brake hoods helps use wind resistance to slow you down gradually.
🧱 Easy on the Brakes
- If you have to brake, do it gently — smooth, subtle adjustments ahead of time are best.
- If you’re still gaining confidence riding in close, or the pace is too hot, hang out near the back until you’re ready to move forward.
🔁 Taking Turns at the Front
- When it's your turn on the front, keep the speed constant for those riding behind. When the rider ahead moves over, don't speed up. When you’ve had enough, ease gently into the slower lane without changing pace. Once the rider behind has moved up, gently slow down and move to the back of the group.
- In strong winds short turns and a quick rotation is more efficient.
🕊 Keep Things Flowing
- Avoid sudden surges when leading — they cause gaps further back and disrupt the rhythm.
- When you're up front, don’t “half wheel” (ride half a wheel ahead). It makes things messier for everyone.
🚵♀️ More Quick Tips
- Pedal downhill when you're leading — the riders behind will thank you.
- Call out and point to any obstacles — holes, gravel, parked cars — and make sure those behind get the message too.
🌀 Bunch Dynamics
- Stay close to save energy — following a wheel can save up to 30% effort at speed.
- Don’t leave gaps. It forces you (and others) to chase.
- Never overlap wheels. A sudden movement from the rider in front can mean a crash.
🧘♂️ Stay Relaxed
- Bumping shoulders, hands, or bars happens. Keep your upper body relaxed and resist the urge to brake or jerk away.
⛰ Climbing
- Riders often slow briefly when standing out of the saddle. Keep a bit more space behind them going uphill to avoid unexpected contact.
👀 Stay Alert
- Don’t fixate on the wheel ahead — scan a few riders forward and watch the road for any changes, obstacles, pedestrians or parked cars.
🚦 Obey the Road Rules
- The risk increases at Stop or Give Way signs. If you’re in the lead, you’ll be making stop/go decisions for the whole group. Signal or shout out your intentions early.
